Wake Forest women’s tennis player Kathryn Talbert secured her first career victory over a ranked singles player Saturday, highlighting the Demon Deacons’ performance on the opening day of the University of Virginia Winter Classic in Charlottesville, Va.
Talbert (Lake Norman H.S.) outlasted Alabama’s Courtney McLane in three sets, rallying for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has McLane rated No. 104 in the country.
Talbert and teammate Kayla Duncan (Statesville Christian H.S.) are the ITA’s 20th-ranked doubles tandem. They lost their opener, 8-2, to McLane and Alexa Guarachi.
Talbert and Duncan did not play together Sunday against Utah, but they won their respective matches.
