Humes a stalwart for Statesville

The hard work Sharif Humes put in during the offseason has paid off for the senior. Humes is 21-2 this season and one of Statesville’s most consistent wrestlers this season.

“He worked hard in the weight room in the offseason and worked hard on his physical conditioning,” head coach Mickey Jordan said. “When he played football, he was 230-235 (pounds), and he started working that down and comes in at 216-217 every day.”

He picked up the signature win of his season when he beat Lake Norman’s Jackson Dowless, a top-10 4A wrestler in Retro Ranking’s polls, in a triple-overtime 4-3 decision.

“That was a really good match,” Jordan said.

Humes is one of three Statesville wrestlers with 20 wins. Marks us Cromwell is 21-2, and Keenan Moten is 21-3. The three wrestlers and La’Bryant Nichols (14-3) are wrestling partners.

“All those guys are seniors, and they push each other,” Jordan said.

The combined record of those four is 77-10.

Injury bug still biting Statesville

Statesville’s wrestling rotation took a huge hit Friday in a 40-36 loss to East Rowan. Head coach Mickey Jordan said Randy Rankins was taken to the hospital after losing consciousness in his loss to Tyler Lloyd.

Rankins can return after two weeks or until he is cleared by his physician.

Jordan said he wasn’t worried about the loss and that he is glad Rankins is OK after the injury.

The Greyhounds right now are also in a bind at 106 pounds. Ralston Teague has yet to hit the mat this year because of a lingering shoulder injury. Jordan said Thursday that Teague might not get cleared till this week.

The lack of time on the mat can hurt Teague’s chances of making the 3A Midwest regional meet in February. Wrestlers need at least 15 matches under their belt to enter. Jordan said a wrestler can enter with less than that, but each match under the minimum is counted as a loss when it comes to the wrestler’s record for seeding.

Statesville is also waiting on Ben Brown, who wrestles at 138 pounds to rejoin the team. Brown broke his wrist while playing soccer. Jordan said he expects him back “any day now.”

Schofield glad to be back

Statesville welcomed head coach Sonny Schofield back to the bench in style Friday. The Greyhounds beat East Rowan 61-48 to improve to 4-1 in conference play and 10-3 overall.

“It felt good to be back, but I’m a little tired,” Schofield said. “I still have to get my immune system built back up.”

Schofield usually stands or squats the entire 32 minutes the Hounds are on the court. He said he sat on the bench for most of Friday’s game.

Schofield was away from basketball after having emergency surgery three weeks ago because of a cancer scare. He said before Christmas that he is cancer free.

He attended the Greyhounds’ games during the R&L/WSIC Holiday Classic and even made a brief appearance on the court Dec. 29 during a timeout in the championship game against Lake Norman.
