Draughn took away South Iredell’s advantage inside to maintain control of Friday’s game from the start. Wildcats forward Hayley Broadwell led her team to a 67-54 win on Friday with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Head coach Jay Murray said the Wildcats (9-5, 2-2 CVAC) responded to his challenge to work the ball down to the post, and Draughn is 7-2 in its last nine games.
The Wildcats and Vikings both missed their share of free throws. South Iredell (8-5, 2-2) was 11 of 23 from the line while Draughn made 22 of 40 attempts. The Wildcats made 10 of 18 in the fourth quarter, including a pair by Lauren Duckworth after the final buzzer sounded. Caylee Johnson was called for the late foul near the middle of the court.
“We played lazy defense and kept them on the free throw line, and that is where they scored all of their points,” South Iredell head coach Michael Fisher said. “They played the smart game.
“They pounded us inside and got fouls in the post, but it’s hard when you foul 50 feet from the basket. We have to play smarter than that.”
The Vikings played from behind for a large part of the game. The Wildcats built a 25-16 lead in the second quarter after eight straight points by Broadwell. The Vikings cut that to a 31-28 halftime deficit.
South Iredell went on an 8-0 in the third and fourth quarters to shrink Draughn’s lead to 50-49 with 6:35 left. Wildcats guard Heather Copeland responded with a 3-pointer 19 seconds later, and the Wildcats scored 10 of their final 17 points from the free throw line.
Aaliyah Jackson, who was honored before the game for reaching 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career, got into foul trouble in the first half. She had three at halftime, picked up her fourth with 2:07 left in the third, and fouled out midway through the fourth. She ended with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Miracle Campbell led South Iredell in three scoring categories. She was 6 of 10 from the stripe and nailed four 3-pointers for a team-high 20 points.
