Aaliyah Jackson achieved a milestone last week at the R&L/WSIC Holiday Classic. Jackson, a senior, finished the Vikings’ semifinal loss to North Iredell with 18 rebounds to give her 1,001 for her career.
The senior forward exited Tuesday’s game against Maiden with 19 rebounds to move her up to 1,035 in her career. She passed Asheville alumna Rhonda Mapp for No. 17 in the state record book. Mapp played for Ashville from 1985-87 and had 1,032 rebounds.
Nakisha Stewart from Bunn High holds the record with 1,553 career rebounds.
Jackson is the first girls basketball player in Iredell County to join the 1,000-1,000 club. According to state records, the county has never produced a girls basketball player with 1,000 career rebounds.
“She is so humble and will be the first to say she is just playing basketball because she loves the game,” head coach Michael Fisher said. “She just loves playing the game and getting out there and contributing, and it shows how big her heart, determination and desire is.”
South Iredell will honor Jackson on Friday when the Vikings host Draughn.
Jackson’s game-leading 28 points in a 60-50 win Tuesday at Maiden put her at 1,240 for her career. Fisher said she has a good chance to get more than 1,500 points for her career. Jackson scored the 1,000th point of her career in the Vikings’ 51-46 loss Nov. 30, 2011, to North Iredell.
Vikings look to unseat Wildcats this weekend
South Iredell has its sights set on accomplishing something no Iredell County team has done in the past eight years. The Vikings want to unseat Lake Norman as the county swimming champions. The Wildcats’ boys and girls team have combined to win 17 county championships since 2003.
South Iredell’s girls and boys team have only two combined losses in the 2011-12 season.
“We are feeling good all around,” South Iredell head coach Laureen Pozega said. “I think we can. I definitely think we can.
“So far they have produced awesome results both boys and girls. We’ve been swimming very well.”
The 2012 county swimming championship is at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Statesville YMCA.
South Iredell’s girls finished as the runner up to Lake Norman in the 2011 Iredell County Swimming Championship. Viking swimmers Kaitlyn Kent and Ashley Cromie won three races as South Iredell finished 136 points behind the Wildcats and 21 points ahead of West Iredell.
Kent and Cromie are back this year. Kent won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke in the 2011 meet, and Cromie won the 400 freestyle.
Bustle still unbeaten
Junior John Bustle is the last South Iredell wrestler without a loss. Bustle is 17-0 this year and the only Viking wrestler ranked in the 2A state polls on Retro Rankings. He is ranked 10th in the 152-pound weight class.
Bustle has won 12 of his 17 matches by pinfall this year.
The Vikings face South Stokes and East Surry on Thursday in a tri-match at South Stokes.
