Lake Norman Notebook: Wildcats sending seven to state tournament

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Lake Norman qualified seven wrestlers for this weekend’s 4A state tournament in Greensboro.

Patrick Devlin, Jonathan DiBernard, Jackson Dowless, Will Greene, Cody Karns, Conner Kominek and Eddie McGrail finished among the top four in their respective weight classes during the 4A West regionals in Cornelius over the weekend.

Lake Norman was the runner-up in the team standings largely because of those wrestlers’ efforts.

Leading the way was Karns, the Wildcats’ lone regional champion. The junior captured the 113-pound title with a pin and three straight first-period technical falls, raising his career win total to 154. He enters the state tournament at 52-1.

McGrail’s route to the 152-pound finals included a win over the top seed. The sophomore lost a 7-5 decision in the closing seconds to finish second.

Greene (160 pounds), DiBernard (182), and Dowless (220) each finished third. DiBernard and Dowless reached the semifinals before losing. They rebounded with victories in the consolation finals.

Kominek, a sophomore, and Devlin, a senior, took fourth place at 106 and 145 pounds, respectively.

End of the road

The seasons drew to a close last week for Lake Norman’s boys and girls basketball teams with a pair of first-round losses in the I-Meck Conference tournament.

North Meck downed the Lake Norman boys. The Wildcats finished 8-14 and missed the state playoffs for the second straight season after capturing the 4A state title in 2010.

Mallard Creek ousted Lake Norman’s girls. Seniors Kaitlyn Hunt and Marissa Riley scored 10 points apiece in the final game of their Wildcat careers. Lake Norman was 11-11.

Best of the best

Logan Heck and Reed Wheeler were recently named Lake Norman’s co-Athletes of the Week following their championship-winning performances at the 4A state swimming meet.

Heck captured the 50- and 100-yard freestyle title, while Wheeler took first in the 100 backstroke. The seniors, who’ve signed with North Carolina and NC State, respectively, earned all-state honors.
