There have been a lot more downs that ups this season for West Iredell’s boys basketball team, but the Warriors were in sync Monday and they coasted to a 63-52 win over North Iredell on the Raiders’ senior night.
“Coach (B.J.) Johnson has stressed playing a complete game,” West Iredell guard C.J. Gibbs said. “I’m still not sure that’s what this was, but we played well and got the job done.”
The Warriors were unselfish but looked to score whenever the situation presented itself, regardless of who had the ball.
That brand has been missing at times this season.
“There were no I’s out there,” Gibbs said. “It was a team effort. That’s why we got the win.”
Jalen Gray led the way, scoring 14 of his team-high 20 points in the first half. The Warriors (8-12, 3-8 North Piedmont Conference) led 31-21 at the break.
Gibbs chipped in with 16 points, and Kam Summers added 10 to go with eight rebounds.
North Iredell never really solved West Iredell’s halfcourt zone defense. The Raiders were 3 of 20 from beyond the arc.
Austin St. John pumped in a game-high 25 points for the Raiders (7-15, 3-8 NPC) but he was their only player in double figures.
A 10-0 run to close the third quarter allowed West Iredell to stretch its lead to 45-29.
Jonathan Ely's 3-pointer with 34 seconds left pulled the Raiders to within 59-52 but that's as close as they got.
It was a head-scratching performance in the eyes of North Iredell coach Tony Davenport. His team knocked off second-place West Rowan last Friday in Mt. Ulla, 43-42.
“You come off such a good win, and we just didn’t come out ready to play,” Davenport said. “That's frustrating. … But West Iredell definitely outplayed us.”
