Four teams from Iredell County start their quest for a dual-team wrestling championship Tuesday. The top-two teams from the North Piedmont and the I-Meck conferences compete tonight in the first round of the 3A and 4A state dual-team wrestling playoffs, respectively.
North Iredell, the No. 1 seed from the NPC, and Mooresville, the I-Meck’s No. 2 seed, are hosts of the first two rounds of their respective tournaments. Action at North Iredell starts at 6 p.m.
The Raiders wrestle St. Stephens in the first round of the playoffs. The Indians (26-7) earned one of two wildcard berths in the 3A West playoffs. They were the second-best 3A team from the Northwestern 3A/4A conference. The winner wrestles either Southwestern Randolph or Kannapolis in the second round.
West Iredell, the NPC’s No. 2 seed, wrestles Weddington in the first round at Newton Foard. West Iredell is 12-7, and Weddington is 22-20. The winner of that match faces either Northwestern 3A/4A champion Newton Foard (28-1) or Enka (27-5).
A third NPC team qualified for the 3A state playoffs. East Rowan (19-5) also received a wildcard berth. Statesville finished third in the NPC and needed to earn one of those wildcard spots if it wanted to qualify for the dual-team playoffs.
In the 4A playoffs, Lake Norman is on the road and Mooresville is at home today.
Lake Norman (29-4) is the I-Meck’s No. 1 seed after it beat Mooresville 34-33 last week. The Wildcats wrestle West Forsyth at West Forsyth in the first round. The winner wrestles the winner of Southeast Guilford-East Forsyth.
Mooresville (30-8) is a host for the first two rounds of the 4A West postseason. The Blue Devils face Charlotte Independence, the Southwestern 4A conference champion, in the opening round. The winner gets either Davie County or Alexander Central, the No. 1 4A team from the Northwestern 3A/4A, in the second round.
