North Iredell wrestling coach Bryan Tutterrow tallied his 400th career win a week ago in the Raiders’ 64-11 victory over South Rowan. Afterward, he was asked about the possibility of catching Bill Mayhew, South Iredell’s legendary coach.
Tutterrow chuckled.
“I won’t be around that long,” he said with a smile.
Mayhew, a North Carolina and National Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee, began coaching at South Iredell when the school opened in 1966 and has nearly twice as many career wrestling victories.
The milestones for coaching wins may slow down for Tutterrow, who began his career at West Iredell, but the conference title pace continues to pick up steam.
The Raiders’ 52-15 win Tuesday at East Rowan clinched their third consecutive North Piedmont Conference championship, none of which were shared. They finished the regular season 25-4 (6-0 NPC) and will be the NPC’s No. 1 seed for the 3A state dual-team playoffs, which begin Tuesday.
This year’s accomplishments are special, Tutterrow said, particularly because of the Raiders’ youth. Seven of the 14 wrestlers they send to the mat at most dual meets are sophomores.
Title contenders
The NPC individual championships are scheduled for Saturday at South Rowan. Several North Iredell wrestlers will be favored to win their weight classes.
Mitchell Hampton (152 pounds), Matthew Tutterrow (113) and Taylor Cockerham (106) won all six of their matches during NPC duals. Hampton is 31-5 overall, Tutterrow is 29-1 and, at 35-0, Cockerham has yet to lose this season.
Ryan Cockerham (120), Cole Trivette (138) and Travis Price (182) were 5-1 during NPC duals.
More pool time
North Iredell qualified eight swimmers in three events for Friday’s 3A regionals in Huntersville.
Shane Whicker was the only individual event qualifier. He will compete in the 100-yard butterfly. Whicker will also swim with teammates Patrick Hunter, Drew Jones and Michael Spencer in the 400 freestyle relay.
Cassidy Dehart, Kelsey McLelland, Rachel Marsilia and Leah Wells will compete in the girls’ 200 freestyle relay. Their coach, Corrine Rupp, was named girls swim coach of the year in the NPC.
