Carlis Parker was at Statesville’s football practice Tuesday afternoon standing without crutches, and he did not have on the full-length brace he’s sported since surgery to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.
The freedom was just temporary. Parker said doctors told him to walk around the whole day without crutches or the brace to test the strength of his leg.
“I’m going to still have my brace on and everything, but they want me to see how it feels for today,” the injured quarterback said. “They still don’t want me to put constant pressure on it all the time.”
Parker added it felt “great to be out of the brace for one day.
“I would be happier to be playing, but I am happy to be out here,” he said.
Parker’s physical therapy right now consists of stretching exercises so the injured joint can regain its flexibility. Parker tore the ligament in the first game of the season when a Hickory defender hit the knee and forced his lower body into an awkward position.
The surgery also went better than expected. Parker said the ligament only needed to be reattached instead of reconstructed. He did not know if that will knock any time off his recovery, which was estimated at nine months.
Statesville soccer showdown
The Greyhounds and West Iredell Warriors enter this week tied for first place in the North Piedmont Conference standings. Both are 2-0-0 against conference teams.
Statesville and West Iredell play an important early season match at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Statesville.
West Iredell swept the 2010 meetings by a combined 3-0 score.
SHS band brings the noise
During halftime of the Greyhounds’ football game last week against North Davidson, the fans in the stands got a new flavor of band music. The band stood on the track and belted out an instrumental version of Kanye West’s “All of the Lights.”
It was a nice change of pace from the normal whimsical halftime shows seen at high school football games around The Tar Heel State. The song also pumped up The Hound Pound, Statesville’s student section, for the second half.
