The top two golfers from Statesville are going to be in Southern Pines this week for the state tournament. Senior Rachel Soltysiak and junior Evelyn Stein tee off early Monday on the first day of the 3A state girls golf championship.
Soltysiak’s first round starts at 10 a.m.at Foxfire. Stein goes off 10 minutes later in the next group.
“I think they will both do well at state,” Statesville coach Leigh Sellers said. “They’ve been preparing three years for this, so I think they’ll do great.”
Leading up to last Monday’s regional tournament, both girls worked on different parts of their games. Soltysiak worked on her drives, and Stein spent time on her short game. Foxfire is 5,787 yards with a par of 72.
“Rachel and Evelyn are ecstatic they are both going together and competing together because Rachel worked so hard and competed for four years,” Sellers said. “We’re going to see a lot of amazing golfers. I hope we’ll be able to bond and hope to have some fun.”
Soltysiak and Stein have a practice round at 11:45 a.m. today.
Allison making the most of opportunity
Due to injuries and the Greyhounds’ revolving backfield this season, Treon Allison has emerged as a good complement to Tristan Mumford. Before Friday’s win over South Rowan, Allison trailed Mumford by only 27 yards rushing this season.
“Due to circumstance, the increased playing time has given him the opportunity to shine and get better,” Statesville head coach Randall Gusler said. “The bottom line is he is finding a on to the field.”
Allison is also hard to bring down. The 5-foot-5, 160-pound junior has averaged more than four yards per carry this season.
