South football on verge of making school history

»  Comments | Post a Comment

South Iredell is on the verge of doing something it has never done on a football field. If the Vikings win Friday, this will be the second straight regular season with an undefeated record. Bill Mayhew, who has coached at the school since it opened in 1966, said the Vikings have never strung together back-to-back regular seasons without a loss.

“This is very special,” Mayhew said. “I always liked the winning part, but it’s fun because we’re all working hard.

“It’s been fun from that standpoint. They are fun to go to practice with.”

South Iredell’s regular-season finale kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at home against East Burke.

The Vikings sit at 21-1 in the past two seasons. They had that many wins from 2006-09, and eight of those came in 2006. Mayhew said South Iredell had 17 straight winning seasons from 1980-96. The Vikings’ only loss the past two years came in the first round of the 2010 playoffs. Forest Hills beat South Iredell 31-30.

Mayhew said South Iredell has the potential to make a deep run in the 2011 playoffs.

Mayhew’s job this season is coaching Cameron Mattox, Iredell County’s leading rusher, and the rest of the Viking running backs. South Iredell’s starter averages 7.9 yards per carry and is the only rusher in the county with more than 1,500 yards.

Mayhew put Mattox in a class with Tyrone Westmoreland – a member of the first Hall of Fame class at South Iredell.

“I’ve seen them all come through, and we had some good ones, but both have the talent to make something happen when nothing is there,” Mayhew said.

2 girls golfers going to state tournament

South Iredell earned a top-10 finish this year in the girls golf 1A/2A West region tournament. Brie Williams finished tied for 14th with a 103 after two nine-hole rounds, and Morgan Deal shot a 104 to tie for 18th. The Vikings finished sixth out of 16 teams Monday at the regional tournament in Kings Mountain.

Williams and Deal both qualified for the 1A/2A state tournament, which is Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.

“We are building this program in steps,” girls golf coach Michael Fisher said in an email. “All of our girls worked extremely hard during the season, and I expect them to continue and practice during the offseason in preparation for the 2012 season.”

Solis picks up eighth hat trick

Omar Solis earned his eighth hat trick of the season Monday in the Vikings’ 7-1 win over Draughn. South Iredell head coach David Basinger said in an email he guesses a player had that many in a prior season because the school record for goals in a season is 49.

The Vikings are a lock to finish second in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference regardless of the score of their match tonight against third-place Bandys. South Iredell (14-5-1, 11-2-0) has a two-game lead in the league standings over Bandys (9-7-1, 9-4-0) with only one regular-season game left.

The Trojans and Vikings get under way at 7 p.m. tonight at Viking Valley.
