After Statesville’s 32-22 playoff victory over Cox Mill on Friday, a player told head coach Randall Gusler everybody could do something they refused to do all week. The Greyhounds (7-4-1) could finally talk about a second shot at West Rowan.
Playoff victories by the top-two teams in the North Piedmont Conference set up a rematch Friday in Mt. Ulla. West Rowan (10-2) beat Mt. Pleasant 31-12 at home Friday.
“It’s a good opportunity for us,” Gusler said. “We felt like the first time we played them, we played them as well as anybody has, and we’re excited to play them again.”
The Falcons, the three-time defending state champions, beat Statesville 22-15 on Sept. 16 in Mt. Ulla.
A second chance at facing them was one of the first things Gusler noticed when the North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the official playoff pairings Oct. 29.
“You see West Rowan right there, and you know it is a team in your conference and with the pod system, you try to figure out what team you have,” Gusler said. “We found that very quickly and were like we get a shot at them again.
“There are a couple of games we felt like we let get away from us. We like seeing them again in the playoffs. It was good to see them in our bracket.”
The Greyhounds are at the Falcons in Round 2 of the 3A Midwest playoffs.
Stein shooting for title in 2012
Junior golfer Evelyn Stein is shooting for a 3A state girls golf championship next year.
Stein ended her season Tuesday with a top-20 finish at Foxfire Golf & Country Club in Foxfire Village in the two-day tournament. She finished 19th with a 40-over 184.
“If she continues to work, she is going to win it,” Statesville girls golf coach Leigh Sellers said. “I think she can do it.”
Tara Simmons from Pikeville Aycock won the championship with an 11-over 155.
