Former NASCAR racer Jeremy Mayfield is in trouble again. He was arrested at his home Tuesday night for possession of methamphetamine.

Investigators with the Lincoln and Catawba County sheriff’s offices, as well as the Mooresville Police Department, went to Mayfield’s home off Hudson Chapel Road in Catawba after getting a tip from a source that Mayfield had stolen property at his home, said Capt. Joel Fish with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.

"A source told us there were things there from breaking-and-enterings in Lincoln County and Mooresville," Fish said. "The police department told us those places had been broken into in the last year."

Fish said investigators got a search warrant to go to Mayfield’s home. They found metal components and sound equipment on the property, he said. Items seized by officials included chassis jig, cases of vehicle fluid, including oil and hydraulic fluid, scrap metal and metal gears, boxes of metal nuts and bolts on pallets and industrial scales, Fish said.

Detectives also found welders and welding accessories, an engraving machine, truck mirrors and electric motor controllers in buildings and trailers on Mayfield’s property, said Larry Seagle, public information officer with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Most of the items recovered are from Lee Family Real Estate LTD, on NC 16 north in Denver, and Larry Grant Inc, a trucking company on South Grove Street Extension in Lincolnton, and are worth about $100,000, Seagle said.

Lee Family Real Estate was broken into on Dec. 28, 2010, and again on Jan. 11. Larry Grant, Inc., had its warehouse broken-into on Nov. 22, 2010.

Fish said Red Bull Racing in Mooresville was also a victim, and authorities recovered team Red Bull Racing apparel at Mayfield’s home.

Investigators recovered 1.5 grams of methamphetamine inside a safe in Mayfield’s home, Fish said.

Mayfield, 42, was charged with one count of felony possession of methamphetamine. He was given a $3,000 unsecured bond. At his first appearance Wednesday, Mayfield was scheduled for Nov. 14 for his next appearance.

Fish said Mayfield was not charged with anything else, because of the ongoing investigation.

"It depends on the investigation," he said. "The breaking-and-entering was done in Lincoln County, and we don’t know if he was involved in those. We’ll do a prosecution summary and let the district attorney’s office look at it."

Seagle said no one has been arrested in the break-ins, and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation.

This is not the first time Mayfield has been in trouble because of drugs. In May 2009, NASCAR suspended him, after saying he tested positive for methamphetamine. Mayfield denied using the drug, saying the results of the random drug tester were the result of the ADHS drug Adderall and the allergy drug Claritin-D.

Since then, Mayfield has held an auction of many of his own possessions in November 2009. He most recently landed in the news in April, after some of his pit bull/Labrador retriever mix dogs bit a postal letter carrier who delivered a package that was too big to fit in his mailbox.

After the dogs attacked the carrier, Mayfield heard the commotion and shouted at the dogs, and he came and brought the carrier to his home, calling 911. The mail carrier sustained bites all over her legs and shoulders and had to be hospitalized.
