Alex Gourley’s first trip to San Antonio, Texas, will be a special one. Gourley, a Mooresville resident, received an invitation to play in the 2012 Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl.
The game is Jan. 8, 2012, the day after the US Army All-America Game.
“There is so much to look forward to,” Gourley said. “It’s in San Antonio, and I think it’ll be great to go there, and they are looking to do a lot of fun stuff. But getting to play more football is probably the best part.”
The 5-foot-11, 225-pound Gourley, an eighth grader at Community School of Davidson, is the center for a Charlotte-based all-star team in the Football University program. He will play center for the East team in the All-American Bowl.
Gourley’s older brother Rob is a junior at South Iredell. Alex Gourley will attend South Iredell next year as an Internatinoal Baccalaureate student.
The invitation to the bowl was a surprise.
The application deadline to participate in the game was Dec. 2. Bob Gourley Jr. said his son’s coach, Larry Kennedy, told him the application process already closed by the time the family learned about it.
Bob Gourley Jr. said Kennedy talked to Eastbay about getting Gourley on the team after a spot opened.
Gourley was playing in a tournament in Orlando, Fla., for his Football University team against teams from South Carolina and Florida. After a game ended, a man with the Eastbay game approached Gourley and invited him to San Antonio. He presented him with a jersey.
“At first I was a little confused, but as he explained, I got very happy and very excited,” Gourley said.
