The West Iredell Warriors defeated Wilkes Central 30-19 Friday night in their 2010 season opener.
The home Eagles dominated early, holding West to just 24 yards of offense and no first downs in the first 19 minutes of the game.
But with 4:38 remaining in the first half, QB Sayer Robinson erupted for 68-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing possession, West cornerback Kam Rucker intercepted Wilkes quarterback Austin McConnell.
The very next play, Warriors running back L.J. Harper broke off another long touchdown run, this time for 62 yards to put the Warriors up 12-7 with 2:47 to go in the half.
A fumbled West snap then set up a 5-yard Eagles touchdown run, but the Wilkes momentum would be short lived as West junior C.J. Gibbs returned the kickoff to the Eagles’ 13-yard line.
The return set up a 12-yard touchdown pass from Robinson to receiver Jalen Gray with 40 seconds left in the first half, giving West an 18-13 lead going into halftime.
The scoring frenzy did not continue in second half as both teams traded scoreless drives throughout the third quarter before Harper had a 51-yard touchdown run with 6:04 to play.
Eagles running back Brandon Parsons answered with a 21-yard TD run of his own on the ensuing drive that would end Wilkes’ scoring for the night. The Warrior offense held the ball for a 3 minute, 41-yard drive, leaving the Eagles with 1:11 on the clock.
After three solid defensive plays, West capped the game with a Kamron Summers pick-six with one second left on the clock to cement the scoring.
During West’s final offense drive, Robinson took an awkward hit and had to leave the game, but West head coach Mark Weycker said he should be fine.
