Commission right about Red Line Rail

As a native of Statesville, I served on the city council in the 1970s. My father was on the county board in the 1950s. I have a strong and continued daily interest in my home county.

The train system and taxes required to build, maintain and operate it could be better used by Iredell and perhaps enable them to continue to create growth through maintaining lower taxes, better schools and other needs the county and city always has to be competitive in the jobs marketplace. The council and leaders should always remember, even with recent changes we are making nationally and statewide, it is the marketplace competition that ultimately determines winners and loser. Iredell should keep plenty of powder dry in the fight to provide better futures for its people.

Many in Mecklenburg do not share the excitement about our train, although it has operated for several years. The cost far exceed the benefits, in my opinion. Traditionally, private capital would explore these opportunities if they were viable. There is a limit as to what the public sector can do to provide benefits and services to citizens who are in need. I feel Iredell has far greater priorities for funds available.

Perhaps, Iredell, Mooresville and Statesville should explore other less expensive options, as well as ways to maximize our current infrastructure in providing transportation to downtown Charlotte for those seeking alternatives and aid.

John Edwards ideal for Dems’ ticket

I think David Parker should encourage John Edwards to run for governor of North Carolina in the primary on the Democratic ticket. I can’t think of a more qualified candidate who truly represents today’s Democratic Party.

I offer my services (pro bono) to help Mr. Parker in this worthwhile effort.

I would like to thank the Iredell County Board of Commissioners for the wisdom they showed in handling the Red Line issue. Even if there were not other needs for the limited taxes citizens can afford to pay, this is still not a good investment for Iredell.
