Statesville police warn of Best Buy text message scam

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Warning -- an offer being received by some local residents to win a Best Buy gift card is a scam.

Investigator Al Pettit of the Statesville Police Department said that reports have come in regarding the text message scam.

He said the text message comes from a wireless phone, likely a pre-paid cell, with the number 347-640-4802.

The text message indicates that the receiver has won a gift card from Best Buy and all they need to do to claim the prize is to text back a series of numbers, which is a code to collect the price.

Best Buy officials told police the company is not offering any gift cards by text and this is a scam.

Pettit said it is likely that texting back the code will give the scammer access to the phone owner’s personal information, which will allow the scammer to make calls and charge the calls to the victim’s account.

The best advice, Pettit said, is to delete the message.
