Two leases filed with the Iredell County Register of Deeds this week confirm that arts and crafts retailer Michaels and pet-supply retailer PetSmart are on their way to Statesville.
The two national chains will take up residence in two of the smaller spaces being planned for the Turnersburg Highway Statesville Retail Center, according to the site plans filed with the Statesville Planning Department.
Each store will take up approximately 14,000 square feet.
A spokesman for Texas-based Michaels had no additional information about the Statesville location when reached by phone Friday.
The developer has wrapped up the permitting process with the city and is now in the process of working with Iredell County, said Elaine Anthony, a city planner.
A still-unidentified apparel store, which will take up 23,600 square feet, will be the anchor for the new shopping center near Home Depot. An unnamed office supply store will take up 15,764 square feet.
Shawn McCleskey, project manager for the developer, RealtyLink, said the shopping center should be complete by fall 2012.
The project avoided a snag in October, when the Statesville Board of Adjustment granted the developer a variance to a city ordinance regarding business façade aesthetics.
Before the variance was approved, McCleskey told the city the project would have to be scrapped because a more ornate façade than what was planned would have added $200,000 to the project.
The project is one of the larger retail developments to come to the city in a while, Anthony said.
