Kathy Barringer and eight of her fellow seniors from Emmanuel’s Place and Mulberry Street Apartments enjoyed a special Valentine’s Day and raised money for a worthy cause.
The Seniors Over 60 Fashion Show took place at Mulberry Street Apartments Tuesday afternoon and raised money for My Sister’s House, the battered women’s shelter in Iredell County.
Barringer, a resident of Emmanuel’s Place, said she was thrilled to be able to walk across the stage at the old school.
“I love fashion. I love meeting people. I have had so much fun,” she said.
The models got some special pampering before the 1 p.m. show. Early Tuesday morning, they went to the cosmetology class at Mitchell Community College to get their hair and makeup done by the students.
Phoebe Ivey, resident services coordinator at Emmanuel’s Place, said the services were donated by the students and Cato’s loaned the clothing and accessories for the show.
“We definitely had a lot of support from the community,” she said.
Shaun Bauger, manager of Mulberry Street, said he hopes this will be the start of many efforts between the senior living communities in this area.
“I want to thank all of you that are taking part,” he said.
Barringer said she thoroughly enjoyed her day in the spotlight. “This was wonderful,” she said.
Ivey said proceeds from the $1 admission charge will be presented to My Sister’s House.
