The Statesville Police Department is searching for two women they say scammed an elderly woman out of $2,000.
On Friday, two women approached an elderly woman at Walmart in Statesville and told her they had found a wallet with a large amount of cash inside and it contained no identification.
They convinced the victim to put up her money to get a share of the larger amount of money. They told her they needed $2,000 to compare serial numbers to make sure the money wasn’t counterfeit, police said.
The 69-year-old woman went to the bank and got the money, police said. The victim handed the money over to the women, one of whom got into a vehicle, police said.
The victim became suspicious and asked the woman who remained outside with her for her driver’s license, police said.
The woman jumped into an older model, faded red or burgundy car, which was driven by the second scammer, and they left the scene, police said.
The two women are described as heavy-set black females. Both appeared to be wearing hospital-style tops.
Anyone with information on these two women can call the SPD at (704) 878-3521 or Iredell-Statesville Crime Stoppers at (704) 662-1340.
