Suspect charged in $1.6M fraud case

A Burlington woman, wanted for defrauding people of $1.6 million in the past three years, was arrested Monday at a family member’s home in Mooresville.

Angela Dawn Campbell, 39, of Burlington, was arrested on 22 counts of obtaining property by false pretense. She is being held in the Iredell County Detention Center in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

According to reports, Burlington police began receiving complaints in September that a woman, posing as a private investor, had defrauded them. The woman told the victims she would invest their money through online trading sites, reports indicate.

Burlington authorities said no money was invested, and the money from some victims was paid to other investors to make it appear the investments were paying off.

Officials said the scam operated from January 2008 to August 2011.

Most of the victims were from the Burlington area, but several live in Florida and South Carolina.

Police said other victims may come forward.
