Registered sex offender charged with attending WIMS practice

A registered sex offender was arrested after authorities said he attended a middle school wrestling practice.

Gerald Papazis, 46, of Idlebrook Lane, Statesville, was arrested on a charge of a sex offender being on a premises intended for children.

On Monday, a report was filed with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office that Papazis was spotted at a wrestling practice at West Iredell Middle School.

Detective Sgt. Leah Taylor of the Special Victims Unit spoke with the witness, and confirmed that Papazis is listed on the sex offender registry.

Papazis was convicted of sex offense in a parental role and three counts of indecent liberties with a child in January in Iredell Superior Court.

Based upon this information, detectives were able to obtain a felony warrant for Papazis and he was arrested on Tuesday.

His bond was set at $25,000.
