Statesville Police: Local family falls victim to costly scam

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Calls promising prizes like a new car and large sums of money are a scam, which the Statesville Police Department says is a lesson learned the hard way by one local family.

SPD Capt. D.B. Johnson said a local family was victimized by a scam from a company called Global International. He said the family received a phone call indicating they had won a large sum of money and a new car but needed them to send money for taxes and fees.

The money was sent via Western Union to an account in Jamaica.

Johnson said the family lost several thousands of dollars to this scam, and he urged citizens to stay alert for this and other types of scams.

He said anyone winning cash or merchandise does not have to pay taxes and fees upfront and most people are aware if they have entered a contest or lottery.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” Johnson said.
