9/11 anniversary events planned for today

Sunday, Sept. 11

 

Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home and First Baptist Church will be hosting a Public Safety Remembrance Service at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 at the church, 815 Davie Ave.

The Rev. Jeff Porter, pastor at First Baptist Church, will read from the scripture and volunteers, selected by Statesville Fire Chief David Bullins, will share prayers. Bullins will also give the keynote address.

Fire trucks and ambulances will be on display for those in attendance to view after the service.

Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 124 Mt. Vernon Church Road, Olin, will host a Heroes Day at 11 a.m. Sept. 11.

The event will include an altar display and a candle-lighting in honor of those lost in the attacks. A special sermon will be delivered by the Rev. Glenn Dancy. There will also be a special anniversary remembrance.

Emergency services vehicles will be on display after the service.

The Mooresville Professional Firefighers Local 4485 will sponsor a 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb from 2-6 p.m. at Lake Norman High School, 186 Doolie Road, Mooresville.

This event is open to the public, not just firefighters. Those wishing to participate can visit http://firehero.org/stairclimb/ to register. The cost of registration is $28 and all participants will receive a T-shirt and a picture of one of the 343 firefighters who died in the terrorist attacks.

Mooresville First Assembly, 407 W. Wilson Ave., Mooresville, will host a special service to remember those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks during the morning worship service, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. Mooresville Mayor Chris Montgomery, members of the U.S. Marine Corps, the South Iredell ROTC and members of the Mooresville police and fire departments, will be the guests for the service. The Rev. Robert Spradley will be officiating at this service. For more information, call (704) 663-5429.

The second annual Troutman Ride and Stride for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) will take place on Sept. 11 at Troutman Middle School

The event is presented by Iredell Health Systems and hosted by Watermark Church. It will feature a 50-mile bike ride, beginning at 9 a.m.; a 25-mile bike ride, starting at 10 a.m.; and 5K and 1-mile fun run/walks, beginning at 1 p.m. Outback Steakhouse is providing a meal for all participants at the event. 

Cost of registration is a $25 donation to the Ride and Stride for JDRF and participants are encouraged to solicit sponsorships for their ride or stride. Register at www.rideandstride.com. The 5K event has been named the Jeffrey Settle 5K in memory of N.C. Probation Officer Jeff Settle, who was killed in a wreck on Aug. 4. Jeff Settle finished first in the non-official race last year. 

There will be a flag presentation at 1 p.m. to honor those in emergency services. Church officials are also inviting all local emergency services personnel to come by to be honored. A live band will be playing from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Reigning Mrs. North Carolina Debbie Miller of Mooresville will be on site. All proceeds go to JDRF.
