It’s Election Day in all of Iredell County’s municipalities.
In Statesville, the sole race is the Ward 6 run-off election between incumbent Flake Huggins and challenger J.D. Williams.
Williams won the Oct. 11 general election but narrowly failed to take more than 50 percent of the vote, which is required by state law for an outright win. Huggins opted to call for a run-off election in an attempt to win his fourth term.
Iredell’s two smallest towns, Love Valley and Harmony, will decide on entire new governing bodies.
And, with the death of Love Valley founder and longtime mayor Andy Barker and the retirement of Harmony Mayor John Ray Campbell, both towns are certain to elect new mayors.
As will the voters in Mooresville, where current town Commissioner Miles Atkins is running against former U.S. Air Force officer Jared Esselman. The town also has elections for the seats in wards 1 and 2, as well as one to fill Atkins’ at-large seat.
Troutman Mayor Elbert Richardson is running unopposed and will win a fourth term if a concerted write-in campaign is not launched against him.
The town will also elect at least one new member of its Board of Aldermen as Alderwoman Amanda Weiser chose not to run for re-election.
Polling places
In Statesville, only voters living in Ward 6 may vote and most will do so at Shiloh AME Zion Church. A small number of voters in the ward will vote at Christ Boulevard Methodist Church.
In Mooresville, all precincts will be open. Their polling places are: Fieldstone Presbyterian Church; Shepherds Fire Department No. 1; The War Memorial Building and Peninsula Baptist Church.
In Troutman, all registered voters may vote at the Troutman Baptist Church.
In Harmony, all registered voters may vote at the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department.
In Love Valley, all registered voters may vote at the Love Valley Chapel.
Foxx coming to Statesville
U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx will be in Statesville on Thursday to attend an intern fair at Mitchell Community College.
Foxx and a representative from her Clemmons office will be on hand to recruit future interns for her congressional office and talk with students about opportunities in public service.
Foxx, a Republican whose 5th District includes much of Iredell County, said she takes in interns for her offices in Clemmons, Boone and Washington three times a year to allow schedule flexibility for college students.
“For students interested in a career in public service or politics,” Foxx said, “this sort of internship can provide not just a valuable learning experience, but a step towards a rewarding career.”
The intern fair, which is being sponsored by the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce and MCC, will be held in the Student Union on the main campus from 12-5 p.m.
