Iredell commissioners approve incentives for Carolina Beverage

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Iredell County Board of Commissioners held one of its shortest meetings in memory Tuesday night as it gave quick and little-debated approval to a handful of items.

The first of these was the granting of an economic development incentive for Carolina Beverage Company of Mooresville.

Mooresville-South Iredell Development Corporation Executive Director Robby Carney told commissioners that Carolina Beverage plans to expand its operations by between $4 million and $8 million in new investment and hire up to 40 new people in the creation of a new product line by the company.

In making his motion to approve the incentives package — of between $77,600 and $155,200 over a five-year period — Commissioner Ken Robertson praised Carolina Beverage for establishing itself as an “innovative” company during the 14 years of its existence and for choosing to remain in Iredell County for its expansion.

“They could have grown anywhere,” he said. “But they chose to grow here.”

Like all six votes taken Tuesday, the matter passed by unanimous 4-0 vote. Board Chairman Steve Johnson was absent in attending to funeral arrangements for his mother who passed away over the weekend.

In other matters, the board:

» Approved a rezoning request by the West Iredell Water Corporation on Island Ford Road for just under two acres of land to allow for the construction of storage facilities and possible office space.

» Accepted a $20,000 Carolina Thread Trail grant which will allow county leaders to plot out where to run Iredell’s portion of a multi-county walking trail.

» Approved a request by the finance department to sign agreements with two companies who seek ways to cut costs and find rebates.

The meeting was over in about 15 minutes and Robertson said, “That’s got to be a record.”
