Through the Run for God program, Tori Searlock found a way to combine her love for running and the word of God.
For the past two Thursdays, Searlock and around 30 other members of Hebron Baptist Church have taken time out of their busy schedules to exercise spiritually and physically.
Searlock said they usually study a story and versus from the Bible relating to running and talk about good running habits before starting the exercise portion.
“I think the setting of the church is conducive to it,” said Pastor Darren Johnson. “The encouragement they get from one another … when you are passing people and you hear them say ‘Good job.’”
Johnson said most people’s lives are busy and they struggle to find time for the word of God and exercise.
According to the Run for God website, the program offers participants the opportunity to join the 5K Challenge, gives them a practical guide to running and a 12-week training plan aimed at completing a 5K while maintaining a Christian focus.
Searlock said it was emotional to see every one out and working together in this program.
“They are working very hard,” she said. “You see that bond growing quickly in the past two weeks.”
Searlock said the 12-week program allows you to build up your stamina.
“It’s a little easier than the Couch to 5K program,” she said.
The booklet for the class costs $20 and it is open to the public. The age range of the current participants is age 5 to the mid-60s.
At the end of the Bible study, the class will do a 5K together, Searlock said.
Johnson said he would like to see the church host its own 5K eventually to benefit the missionaries it supports.
The classes take place at 6 p.m. at the church, which is located at 175 Hebron Road.
“It is a great place to run,” Johnson said.
