Workshop aims to help job-seekers find their niche

Margaret Morgan recently learned how to put her best characteristics and strengths into words for a prospective employer.

Morgan, a recent graduate from Appalachian State University, completed the two-day Grad 2 World, a subsidiary of PowersKarr Inc..

PowerKarr Inc. owners Marion Karr of Statesville and Bret Powers believe the program they jointly developed will help job seekers to show off their strengths and become more marketable in a sea of job seekers.

Karr said Powers brought the idea to his attention. Colleges were teaching students the nuts and bolts of a job search, such as resume writing and interviewing, but the students weren’t being told how to tell why they would be a good fit for a job opening.

“The idea is that college graduates aren’t able to sell their story in the job market,” Karr said. “It is not just about the resume and the interview. What makes them someone that company needs?”

In order to help the graduates, Karr and Powers are drawing on their experiences in executive recruitment. The two-day, seven hour workshop focuses on the individual and walks them through the process of discovering what about them can translate to the job market.

“Nobody right now is teaching a program like this,” Karr said.

The classes are $595 for two workshops, and two months of unlimited help from Karr and Powers. The next workshops in Statesville are on July 12 and 14 at Sabine’s News Café on East Broad Street.

During those two months, Karr and Powers will help participants individualize resumes for jobs and prepare for interviews.

“With the program, I was able to see what all I had learned, whether it was in school or the real world,” Morgan said.

Each participant is asked to take an online self-assessment before each class. The test helps the students to identify their strengths.

Morgan said she was surprised with her results. She said her strengths turned out to be organization, individualism and communication, among others.

Morgan said she can now compare her strengths and experience to what a company is looking for and decide if she would be good for that job.

“There are a lot of people who are looking for jobs and haven’t realized what their strengths are,” she said.

Karr said there will be more workshops available in Charlotte and in other cities. For more information or to register, go to www.Grad2World.com.
