MCC's Continuing Education aims to broaden horizons

Roberto Gonzalez is taking steps toward finding a job that pays well.

Gonzalez, 39, attended Mitchell Community College’s Continuing Education open house Tuesday evening.

He’s interested in signing up for course dealing with heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

“Right now I’m jobless so I’m looking for something that pays more than $8 or $9,” he said.

During the three-hour open house, staff members set up tables in the auditorium and interacted with attendees. The mission of the inaugural event was to educate interested students on training opportunities available. Table themes included human resource development, motorcycle safety, online education, personal enrichment, public safety and English as a second language.

Thomas Smith, 23, hopes to broaden his skills with a welding class.

“I want to learn about welding and make good money,” said Smith, who attended the open house with his sister, Brittney. “It’s something I love doing.”

He plans to start the program in September.

Coupled with traditional training courses, Continuing Education also offers classes such as arts and crafts, dance and exercise, food and culinary, and more.

“We want to provide an opportunity for people to come in and see what we offer here at Continuing Ed,” said Beverly Hedrick, director of occupational extension.

According to Hedrick, between 12,000 and 14,000 people are served per year in Continuing Education.
