A broken sewer pipe resulted in 66,500 gallons of sewage flowing into Dye Creek in Mooresville last Friday, town officials said Wednesday.
The spill was not of magnitude to cause immediate danger to human health or the environment, officials said. The sewer overflow was the direct result of an 18-inch gravity sewer line collapse on the outfall off Ferncliff Drive. The resultant spill entered a tributary to Dye Creek. The sanitary sewer overflow was estimated at approximately 66,562 gallons.
The spill was first discovered at 7:45 a.m. and eliminated by 9:45 a.m. However, the sanitary sewer line collapsed again around 11:00 a.m. and the resultant spill lasted until 4:30 p.m. Town Staff worked to restore the main and had to replace approximately 13 feet of line.
