Cal Thomas backs Keadle in national column

Iredell County Commissioner and U.S. House of Representatives candidate Scott Keadle picked up a pretty weighty endorsement on Tuesday.

That's when nationally syndicated columnist and conservative talk show commentator Cal Thomas wrote that Keadle "has the right attitude."

Thomas, who will be the keynote speaker at an event this Sunday afternoon at the Statesville Civic Center, based his candidate assessment on comments Keadle has made several times about his desire to be a "citizen legislator."

In a column that first appeared Tuesday in the Washington Examiner, Thomas excerpts a recent Gaston Gazette story in which Keadle is quoted as saying, "The U.S. Congress is not a career. You can't possibly be a conservative and say your only job is being a legislator."

Thomas' column also cites a pledge made by Keadle — who is running for the 10th District seat — in which he eschews automatic pay raises and the congressional pension and vows to serve only three terms.

In the column, Thomas points to Keadle's position and comments as being representative of ways to make right what is wrong with the federal government.

"The problem in Washington has at least two dimensions," Thomas writes. "One is the virus of corruption that does not discriminate between parties. The other is the character of the individuals voters send to Washington, too many of whom become corrupt because they stay too long."

Thomas says the problem does have a solution.

"But," he writes, "it would require an act of selflessness not usually associated with politics and politicians."

It is at this point in the column he brings up Keadle, a dentist who lives in Mooresville.

"Commissioner Scott Keadle has the right attitude about serving in Congress," Thomas writes.

Keadle faces a May 4 Republican primary election against incumbent Patrick McHenry, Morganton businessman Vance Patterson and David Bolden of Maiden.

Two Democrats, Jeff Gregory of Shelby and Anne Fischer of Morganton, are also running for the 10th District seat.
