It was a rather easy rescue and certainly a rewarding one for Statesville Fire Department firefighter Rawdy Cox.
For his efforts, Cox was rewarded with a couple of licks to the face from the puppy he rescued from a storm drain and with the smiling faces of the children who owned the puppy.
Cox and his fellow firefighters from the SPD answered a call on Memorial Day weekend in the 1100 block of Eighth Street. The call was about a puppy stuck in a storm drain.
They arrived, and sure enough, the pup was in the storm drain.
The pup was following behind his masters, who were headed to a neighbor's house. For some reason, the dog walked into the storm drain and, either scared or stuck, stayed inside.
A call was placed to the fire department, and that's where Cox and his fellow firefighters came to the rescue.
"We were looking at what was the best way to get the puppy out,"
Cox said. He went to the other side of the storm drain, and called the puppy, which nudged his way to Cox.
The firefighters checked the puppy out, but he didn't appear to have suffered any injuries from his stay in the storm drain.
"He was fine," Cox said.
He and his crewmates stuck around for a few minutes, playing with their new friend, who was then returned to his very happy owners.
"They were thrilled," Cox said. "They were very worried about him."
