SPD officer fired after larceny charge

A Statesville police officer was fired Thursday and faces a larceny charge in connection with the theft of a weight bench that was left as a donation at the Salvation Army Thrift Store on West Front Street.
Brian Joyner, who has been with the Statesville Police Department for two years, has been charged with misdemeanor larceny.
Statesville Police Chief Tom Anderson said a citizen filed a complaint with an SPD supervisor on July 18.
That person reported that Joyner, who was on duty and in an SPD car at the time of the alleged incident, took a weight bench that had been left outside the donation area of the thrift store just after 7 p.m. July 18.
The Salvation Army Thrift Store was closed at the time.
Anderson said an internal investigation, both on the administrative and criminal levels, started as soon as the complaint was received.
"We got the information and addressed the situation quickly," he said.
After an internal investigation was completed, he said, detectives consulted with the district attorney's office and the decision was made to file the misdemeanor larceny charge.
Anderson said the weight bench, which was used, was valued at $100.
"It's an unfortunate situation," Anderson said.
