The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's preliminary 2009-10 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) scores were released Wednesday.
Nineteen of 35 (54.3 percent) schools within the Iredell-Statesville Schools district met AYP standards. AYP is a way of measuring how federally defined student groups are progressing in compliance with the math and reading proficiency goals set forth in the No Child Left Behind Act.
Some 115 education agencies across the state learned of their preliminary scores Wednesday. The scores become official after state approval in early August.
The numbers mark a notable drop for I-SS compared to the 2008-09 year, when 28 schools met AYP standards.
AYP percentages are based on the performance of students on their end-of-grade tests in grades 3-8, and 10th grade students on their Algebra 1, English 1 end-of-course tests, writing tests, high school comprehensive tests, or a combination of those.
Under No Child Left Behind, which was passed by Congress in 2001 and signed into law by then-President George W. Bush in 2002, all students must perform at grade-level proficiency by 2014.
As part of the law, each school has subgroups that must meet their target goals.
Subgroups include:
+ Economically disadvantaged students;
+ Students with disabilities;
+ White students;
+ Black students;
+ Asian students;
+ American Indian students;
+ Hispanic students;
+ Multiracial students;
+ Limited English-proficient students; and
+ All students
All subgroups must meet their respective goals for the school to meet AYP standards.
I-SS schools that met AYP include: Celeste Henkel, Central Elementary, Collaborative College of Technology, Cool Spring, Harmony Elementary, Lake Norman Elementary, Lakeshore Elementary, Lakeshore Middle, Monticello School, Mt. Mourne IB School, Northview, Scotts, Visual and Performing Arts Center, Sharon Elementary, Shepherd Elementary, Third Creek, Union Grove, West Iredell High and Woodland Heights.
Schools that didn't meet AYP include: Brawley Middle (94 percent); Coddle Creek Elementary (94 percent); Cloverleaf Elementary (88 percent); East Elementary (82.8 percent); East Middle (93 percent); Lake Norman High (86.7 percent); N.B. Mills (89.5 percent); and North High (80 percent); North Iredell Middle (95 percent); Pressly School (66.7 percent); Statesville Middle (96.6 percent); Statesville High (85.7 percent); South Iredell High (92 percent); Troutman Elementary (87 percent); Troutman Middle (95 percent); and West Iredell Middle (96 percent).
In the Mooresville Graded School district, six, or 75 percent, out of eight schools met AYP standards.
NF Woods Arts and Technology, Mooresville Middle, Mooresville Senior High, Park View Elementary, Rocky River Elementary and South Elementary met AYP standards while East Mooresville Intermediate and Mooresville Intermediate failed to do so.
