U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx filed on Monday to run for a fourth term as the representative from North Carolina's 5th District, which includes a large portion of Iredell County. She filed at the Watauga County Board of Elections office.
Foxx said the economy and staying safe from terrorism are foremost in the minds of most of her constituents.
"North Carolinians want someone in Washington who will fight to ensure their tax dollars are spent wisely and not wasted," she said. "With Washington under the control of big-spending liberals, we have seen our deficits explode and our debt skyrocket."
Foxx said her goal is to "help return us to the limited federal government our founders envisioned."
Foxx said her voting record reflects her position as a proponent of keeping taxes low and ensuring that the government "lives within its means."
In the past year, she notably has opposed President Barack Obama's stimulus package and the Democratic Party-led health care reform bill.
Foxx also touts a bill she shepherded through Congress during her third term that improves on-base housing for soldiers in the Army as an example of her support for the troops.
She said she will "continue to work to keep North Carolinians safe from the threat of terrorists who wish to destroy our freedoms and way of life."
Foxx said she will continue to "oppose Washington's liberal agenda and fight to preserve freedom and keep big government at bay."
The 5th District includes the northern two-thirds of Iredell County, including all of incorporated Statesville.
