Groucho's opens in Statesville

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Brandon Sutton and his wife, Cindy, are hoping Groucho's Deli, which opened last week in downtown Statesville, will be more than just a place to grab a great sandwich.

"In Columbia, S.C., it's that meeting place and that's what I want for Statesville," said Brandon, who moved here with Cindy six years ago. "It's something I felt Statesville didn't have."

The Suttons and their new staff held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday morning to officially introduce the public to Groucho's.

During the grand opening, customer Wendy Long was one of many people to enjoy the food.
Monday was her second visit.

"It's a cute place — good food and friendly people," she said.

The deli is located at 101 East Broad Street, the building La Dolce Vita Cafe once occupied.

Brandon, who became familiar with the Groucho's chain while living in Columbia, S.C., for five years, left his job with Lowe's after 15 years there to open the restaurant.

The first Groucho's opened in 1941 in Columbia.

Greg Charlton came up from South Carolina to support his sister, Cindy.

He is familiar with the menu, having been a frequent customer while living in South Carolina.

"This is a very relaxing atmosphere and a great location," he said.

The restaurant is beginning to take shape.

There are two flat-screen televisions, pictures of Statesville landmarks, and awards given to Groucho's.

Cindy said they will eventually have walls dedicated to local high schools and will display their sports jerseys, and an art wall showing local artists' work.

But for now there is a wall for the Statesville Downhillbillies the and American Renaissance School, where their son attends school.

Brandon said he hopes the grand opening will let people know about the eatery's quality service and offer people "a taste of Groucho's."
