LOVE VALLEY, NC - A man was shot and killed Tuesday evening in what authorities have termed a domestic situation.
A woman called 911 from a residence off Fox Mountain Road Tuesday and told authorities her estranged husband was at her home and was trying to break in, said Capt. Darren Campbell of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies, including Campbell, who was in the area, responded and arrived to find a man on the back porch. He had been shot, Campbell said.
Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene.
The man has been identified as Dustin Steed, 30, of Thomasville.
He and his wife, Jennifer, were not divorced but had been estranged for three years, Campbell said.
Jennifer Steed is a telecommunicator with the Iredell County Emergency Communications Center.
Campbell said Jennifer Steed was at home by herself when her husband arrived.
Campbell said Dustin Steed was accompanied by his girlfriend and his 9-year-old from a previous relationship.
The child stayed in the car and did not witness the shooting, Campbell said.
The girlfriend did get out of the car and tried to pull Dustin Steed away from the house, Campbell said.
At some point, Campbell said, Dustin Steed grabbed a large piece of wood from just outside the house and used it to break the sliding glass doors. Jennifer Steed told deputies she feared for her life and fired a shot, Campbell said.
The investigation into the shooting is continuing. No charges have been filed.
