Jury selection slow in capital case

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Jury selection in a capital murder case ended early Tuesday after the pool dwindled to one potential juror.
A total of four jurors have been approved by both the state and defense to determine the fate of Travis Ramseur, who is facing two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder in the November 2004 shooting deaths of Angelo Stockton, 26, of Statesville, and Timothy Cook, 28, of Woodleaf. A third man was wounded in the shooting.

Jury selection will resume today when an additional 75 jurors are scheduled to report.
Jury selection began on Monday, and after a full day of questioning, four jurors were seated. Less than a half-dozen potential jurors remained out of the pool summoned to court on Monday.

Judge Richard Boner ordered the Iredell County Sheriff's Office to locate some 11 jurors who were summoned to appear but did not. A total of six were located and appeared in court Tuesday.

Still, with eight seats to fill, the dozen jurors available dwindled to one, and in order to keep the selection random, more than one person has to remain in the pool of potential jurors.

As a result, court recessed early, awaiting the arrival of the new group of potential jurors Wednesday.
Once the 12 jurors are selected, both sides will have to agree on at least two, and possibly three, alternate jurors.
Boner told potential jurors that jury selection could last into next week, and the trial itself is expected to last four to six weeks.
