Deputy injured in scuffle with shooting suspect

TROUTMAN, NC - A deputy was injured Tuesday afternoon in a scuffle with a man suspected of shooting his adult son.
Capt. Darren Campbell of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to 209 Carlyle Road near Troutman Tuesday afternoon after receiving a call about a shooting at the residence.
Campbell said initial information was that the man was still armed and refusing to come out of the residence. When a deputy arrived on the scene, he and the suspect got into a scuffle on a small front porch.
"They were struggling with each other and went over the porch railing," Campbell said.
The deputy, Mark Benfield, had a laceration on his head from the six-foot fall.
Other deputies, as well as officers from the Troutman Police Department, arrived and helped bring the suspect under control, Campbell said.
The son, Keith Wayne Jordan, was transported to Lake Norman Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound to the thigh. He was treated and released.
A fellow deputy transported Benfield to Iredell Memorial Hospital.
Campbell said the shooting itself is under investigation, and authorities are not sure what prompted Joseph Jordan to shoot his son.
The elder Jordan, his ex-wife, who still lived in the house with him and the adult son were at home at the time of the shooting.
Campbell said he wasn't aware of any past incidents at the residence.
Joseph Jordan was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, obstructing and delaying a law enforcement officer and assualt on a governmental official. His bond was set at $15,000.
