Chase results in crash, charges

A 21-year-old man is facing numerous charges after authorities said he led a deputy on a high-speed chase Saturday night.
Akeem Ramon Robertson, 21, of Long Island Road was charged with felony speeding to elude arrest, possession of marijuana, driving while impaired, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, no operator's license, driving left of center and passing on a double yellow line.
On Saturday night, Sgt. Randall Chilton of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office encountered a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and on the wrong side of Old Mountain Road.
Chilton caught up with the vehicle, Iredell Sheriff Phil Redmond said, but the driver didn't stop. The vehicle did slow down and pulled into the parking lot of a convenience store at Old Mountain Road and Highway Highway, and exited onto Hickory Highway.
Chilton said the vehicle was being operated erratically and was frequently on the wrong side of the road. The chase proceeded down Eufola Road, Chilton said.
The suspect then turned onto the dead-end portion of Lewis Ferry Road, and then onto Long Island Road, where the driver lost control of the vehicle, which hit a tree.
A deputy transported Robertson to Iredell Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.
He was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center where bond was set at $6,000.
Redmond said Robertson is currently on probation and has pending charges of reckless driving and no operator's license.
