Friends of the Library organization releases latest bookmark

The Iredell Friends of the Library organization is looking to expand with the help of a local artist.
The organization, which donates about $15,000 annually to the Iredell County Public Library, is currently in the middle of its membership drive. A locally created bookmark titled "Glory Days I" is being used to entice people to join the organization.
"The bookmarks are given as a 'thank you' gift for joining the club," said Iredell Friends of the Library President Louanne Watts.
The art of the bookmark was taken from a work by local artist Susan Crouch, who was inspired by a picture of a friend's garden. The wartercolor was completed three years ago.
"I knew her artwork was good and I knew it would entice people to join," Watts said of Crouch.
The organization, which has a membership of 108 people, uses a local artist's work every year on its membership bookmark. Last year's "To Kill a Mockingbird"-themed bookmark was created by a local high school student.
Funds are raised through membership dues, donations and fundraisers. Nineteen new computers on the second floor of the Iredell Public Library are attributed to the work of the Friends. The organization also provides funds to the summer reading program, pays costs associated with visiting authors, and more.
"We provide services the county budget doesn't cover," Watts said.
The annual Friends of the Library membership meeting will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 20. The meeting will also serve as the organization's five-year birthday party. For more information about the organization, pick up a brochure at the library.
