With all the rain that has drenched northwestern Iredell County recently, some may think that water would be the last thing on the minds of Love Valley town commissioners.
But after hearing it had received a loan to help the town connect to EnergyUnited Water Corporation, Mayor Andy Barker called the announcement "the greatest thing in the world."
In May, the N.C. Local Government Commission announced that the town had been accepted for an $856,826 loan through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The 20-year loan has a zero-percent interest rate and half of the principal will be forgiven, meaning the town has to repay only $428,413.
Rod Watts, the general manager of Stony Point EnergyUnited Water Corporation, said plans for the project are being reviewed by the N.C. Department of Transportation and the N.C. Department of Natural Resources. Once those agencies sign off on the plans, the project will be put out to bid.
"There is a need for more water in more places in Love Valley and this will help those folks," Watts said.
EnergyUnited water lines run within three miles of Love Valley, off Sloan Road, he said, explaining Love Valley would be connected to those lines.
In addition to providing residents and businesses with water, the town will also have fire hydrants installed.
Construction should get started this summer and be finished by Dec. 1.
"It's going to be our Christmas present," said Barker.
He estimated it has been almost 40 years since the town's well was put in place.
