Statesville Police Department Interim Chief Tom Anderson said a pit bull dog was killed when it charged at an Iredell County Sheriff's Office canine Monday.
Anderson said members of the SPD Narcotics Unit and Special Operations Team were serving a search warrant at a home on Linden Drive. Anderson said the subject of the search warrant, Donald Rucker of Statesville, was seen trying to dispose of a quantity of crack cocaine in a garbage disposal.
A total of 2.5 grams of crack cocaine were found, he said.
The SPD requested the assistance of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office canine handler, Deputy Keith Bills and his canine, Rambo.
Anderson said there were several pit bulls loose in the yard, and Iredell County Animal Control came and secured the dogs with chains. As Bills and Rambo were checking the area, Anderson said, one of the dogs broke loose from its chain and tried to attack Rambo. Bills shot the pit, killing it.
Animal control came and removed the dog.
Donald Rucker and Shirley Rucker, both of Statesville, face several charges, relating to the crack cocaine and some non-tax paid alcohol found at the property, Anderson said.
