Hickory, N.C. -- The grand opening of the new Hickory playground inspired by and named after Zahra Baker will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. Buzz Bakewell Jr., of Morganton-based Protect it First, spent Thursday morning making some final preparations to the park’s equipment at the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground.

Legal troubles continue to mount for former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield. On Wednesday, a Forsyth County judge ordered Mayfield to pay $1 million to a Catawba postal carrier attacked last year by Mayfield's five pitbulls.
Domestic dispute leads to murder and arson near Lake Hickory Country Club
The bank that loaned former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield about $3 million for his home spent more than half of that to buy the property back at an auction on Monday afternoon. About 25 people showed up to see what would happen to the home and land owned by Mayfield and his wife. His home and property were auctioned on the courthouse steps in Catawba County just after noon.
HICKORY, N.C. -- Amendment One is the official name of the Marriage Amendment. It is about politics and religion. It would modify the North Carolina Constitution by defining marriage to the exclusion of same-sex couples.
The skeletal remains, which include a skull, that were found on a road on N.C. 268 Tuesday morning are at the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation’s lab for testing. Hunters found the remains mid-morning Tuesday on Winkler Way off N.C. 268 just north of Lenoir and called the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office. They, in turn, alerted the Hickory Police Department because the remains are near an area where Zahra Baker’s body was thought to be.

The Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground is not the only way the Kiwanis Clubs inCatawbaCountyare honoring a child that has come to mean so much to the residents of the region. A scholarship will be established in her name, as well. Area Kiwanis Clubs used to loan money to students so they could attend college. Several years ago that was done away with and the Hickory Kiwanis Foundation was established, said Steve Aaron, a member of the Western Catawba Kiwanis club and the steering committee chair for the playground. About $700,000 is in the fund for college scholarships, given to students on a needs-basis. None of the scholarships are awarded strictly to students who are disabled, however.
In addition to his legal troubles, former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield now faces losing his home and land because he owes nearly $3 million for the property. Mayfield, 42, was in Catawba County Superior Court Monday on five felony charges that stem from a search warrant that was executed at his Catawba home in November. He is facing one count of possession of methamphetamine for 1.5 grams officers found in his home, three counts of possession of stolen goods and one count of obtaining property by false pretenses. He is facing additional charges inCaldwellCountyfor four counts of larceny for the theft of four trailers.
Although Adam Baker left the United States more than two months ago, the district attorney’s office did not dismiss pending charges against him and an order for his arrest was issued Monday when he did not show up in Caldwell County District Court. Baker is the father of Zahra Baker. The 10-year-old cancer survivor was found dead, her body dismembered, in Caldwell County in the fall of 2010. Baker’s wife, Elisa, pleaded guilty to Zahra’s murder in September 2011. Baker, 34, was not charged in Zahra’s death.
One week after former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield was indicted on charges in Catawba County, he is facing additional counts in Caldwell County. Mayfield, 42, was indicted on four counts of felony larceny on Monday, all related to DEA Ventures, a trucking company in Hudson. According to the indictment, Mayfield stole four trailers from the company on Feb. 26, 2011. One of the trailers contained a sofa, loveseat, trunk, chest-of-drawers, table, cabinet and three chairs belonging to DEA Ventures.

It took only 21 minutes to seal Elisa Baker’s fate in federal court Thursday, where she pleaded guilty to a drug conspiracy charge. She is expected to receive the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The plea agreement with the US Attorney’s office disposes the last pending charges against Baker, who is serving 14 to 18 years for the murder and dismemberment of her stepdaughter, Zahra Baker.
Adam Baker is expected to be in Superior Court Wednesday for a plea deal, according to his attorney Mark Killian. “We’ve worked out a plea agreement,” Killian told Superior Court Judge Beverly Beal when Baker’s case was called before the court.
