Statesville hired someone in house to take the reins of the girls basketball program. Greg Stewart was selected by the school administration as the team’s new leader, athletic director Bobby Morrison said in an email to The R&L on Monday.

Monroe Parkwood gained the advantage over Statesville with a pair of first-half goals in a first-round 3A state playoff game at Statesville. The Greyhounds dialed up the intensity in the second half, but the Rebels held on for a 2-1 victory Thursday.

The junior at South Iredell is running three races "Friday in the 2A state track championship at North Carolina A&T, and then she will be at the Vikings’ field Saturday for their soccer game in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A state playoffs.
A pair of softball teams from Iredell County starts its quest for a state championship at home this week. North Iredell and Lake Norman, the North Piedmont and I-Meck champions, respectively, earned the top seed from their leagues and a first-round home game.

South Iredell linebacker LaChaston Smith picked up another scholarship offer from a Southeastern Conference school. Smith, a three-star linebacker, was offered a football scholarship by South Carolina, Vikings head coach Scott Miller said Wednesday night in a text message to the R&L.
A vote to remove non-boarding parochial schools from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has failed.
Parks Thompson and Julian Hawkins have played only four doubles matches together in 2012. Despite that, head coach Shelley Wolf said coaches in the North Piedmont Conference told her Thompson and Hawkins should be the 2012 state doubles tennis champions.
Morgan Byrne and Allison Stearns connected for two of Hough’s three goals Tuesday as the Huskies earned a 3-1 victory at home over Lake Norman. The first came on a left-footed shot by Byrne, assisted by Stearns, with 2 minutes left in the first half that broke a 0-0 tie.
West Rowan scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Monday to hand North Iredell a season-ending 10-7 loss in the first round of the North Piedmont Conference tournament.
Miranda Cummings put on a hitting display her coach wanted to see all year. Cummings went 3 of 4 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs in the fifth-seeded Warriors’ 9-2 win over fourth-seeded West Rowan in the first round of the North Piedmont Conference tournament.
South Iredell dominated Newton-Conover just like it has dominated the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference the past three seasons. The Vikings scored four first-half goals Friday en route to a 6-1 victory over the Red Devils.
