The difference in communication and play on South Iredell’s defense between Saturday’s win and Wednesday’s win was noticeable to say the least. Goalkeeper Sam Stec stayed in goal more often Wednesday against Polk County and there was a lot less confusion.

Porter Ridge ousts Lake Norman softball
Porter Ridge continues to have everyone’s number in 2012. Lake Norman proved to be no different Tuesday, as the unbeaten Pirates ended the Wildcats’ season for the second time in as many years.

Lions going to state semis
Statesville Christian is going to the state semifinals in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1A state playoffs. The top-seeded Lions beat Wayne Country Day 3-1 on Tuesday at Mazeppa Road Park in Mooresville.

Wildcats lacrosse makes state title game
Lake Norman lacrosse made it to the game people expected it to go to last year. The undefeated Wildcats (22-0) beat Myers Park 13-7 in the state semifinals of the N.C. High School Athletic Association lacrosse playoffs.

Raiders softball smacks 13 hits in playoff victory
North Iredell was clutch with its back against the wall Tuesday. The Raiders scored seven of their eight runs with two outs on the board in an 8-1 win over Hickory Ridge in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A state softball playoffs.

Stewart taking helm of Statesville girls basketball
Statesville hired someone in house to take the reins of the girls basketball program. Greg Stewart was selected by the school administration as the team’s new leader, athletic director Bobby Morrison said in an email to The R&L on Monday.

Jackson scores 4, carries South soccer to playoff win
As they filed out of Viking Valley on Saturday, three players from Wheatmore told Aaliyah Jackson, “Good game.” The senior midfielder put the Vikings on her back and carried them to an 8-6 win over the Warriors in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A state soccer playoffs.

Parks Thompson and Julian Hawkins took care of business Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Statesville’s doubles tandem of Julian Hawkins and Parks Thompson earned a pair of doubles victories Friday to advance to the semifinals of the 3A state championship.

Easter earns pair of top-five finishes
Elizabeth Easter went into Friday’s state track meet with a few butterflies. She said Thursday she was “a little nervous” about running in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle races, two events she dominated at the 2A West regional last weekend.

Statesville stumbles
Monroe Parkwood gained the advantage over Statesville with a pair of first-half goals in a first-round 3A state playoff game at Statesville. The Greyhounds dialed up the intensity in the second half, but the Rebels held on for a 2-1 victory Thursday.

Wildcats shut down Pirates
Lake Norman utterly dominated Porter Ridge, and Kendall Fischlein was able to etch her name in the Lake Norman record books in the first round of the 4A state soccer playoffs. The junior forward recorded a pair of assists, and the Wildcats beat the Pirates 4-1.

South's Campbell pulling double duty
Miracle Campbell will be busy the next two days. The junior at South Iredell is running three races "Friday in the 2A state track championship at North Carolina A&T, and then she will be at the Vikings’ field Saturday for their soccer game in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A state playoffs.

2 Iredell softball teams open at home
A pair of softball teams from Iredell County starts its quest for a state championship at home this week. North Iredell and Lake Norman, the North Piedmont and I-Meck champions, respectively, earned the top seed from their leagues and a first-round home game.

Vikings soccer dominates in first round
Sarah McConnell stepped on the field with a little fear running through her body. The freshman midfielder didn’t show it as she made a pair of early runs, scored the Vikings’ first goal and assisted on the second.

Archibald qualifies for state tournament
Statesville is sending one golfer to Foxfire Resort and Golf this spring for a shot at the state championship. Jack Archibald, who won the Iredell County golf championship last week, shot a 4-over 75 in Monday’s 3A Midwest Regional tournament to become the third individual qualifier for the 3A state championship.

Dylan Carpenter’s one-out, bases-loaded single to left field in bottom of the 12th inning clinched the North Piedmont Conference tournament championship Thursday for Carson and ended West Iredell’s season.

Carson continued its run through the latter part of the season with a victory Thursday at West Iredell in the North Piedmont Conference tournament championship.

South Carolina offers Smith
South Iredell linebacker LaChaston Smith picked up another scholarship offer from a Southeastern Conference school. Smith, a three-star linebacker, was offered a football scholarship by South Carolina, Vikings head coach Scott Miller said Wednesday night in a text message to the R&L.

A vote to remove non-boarding parochial schools from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has failed.

Expectations are high for Greyhounds doubles team
Parks Thompson and Julian Hawkins have played only four doubles matches together in 2012. Despite that, head coach Shelley Wolf said coaches in the North Piedmont Conference told her Thompson and Hawkins should be the 2012 state doubles tennis champions.

Huskies top Wildcats, earn I-Meck soccer title
Morgan Byrne and Allison Stearns connected for two of Hough’s three goals Tuesday as the Huskies earned a 3-1 victory at home over Lake Norman. The first came on a left-footed shot by Byrne, assisted by Stearns, with 2 minutes left in the first half that broke a 0-0 tie.

North's season ends with loss to West Rowan
West Rowan scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Monday to hand North Iredell a season-ending 10-7 loss in the first round of the North Piedmont Conference tournament.

West softball wins, sets up tourney game with North
Miranda Cummings put on a hitting display her coach wanted to see all year. Cummings went 3 of 4 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs in the fifth-seeded Warriors’ 9-2 win over fourth-seeded West Rowan in the first round of the North Piedmont Conference tournament.

Vikings earn share of third straight CVAC title
South Iredell dominated Newton-Conover just like it has dominated the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference the past three seasons. The Vikings scored four first-half goals Friday en route to a 6-1 victory over the Red Devils.
