You probably don't recognize the name Whitcomb L. Judson. If you do, you probably have too much time on your hands and need to get out a little more. On August 29, 1893, Judson patented the zipper. At the time of the patent it was called a "hookless fastener." There were a number of modifications made and eventually the "hookless fastener" evolved into the zipper we know today. When the B.F. Goodrich Company began marketing their galoshes with the "hookless fasteners" in the 1920's, things began to take off. I am not an expert on the history of the zipper, but I am sure somewhere there is a museum, dedicated to everything there is to know about the zipper.

My high school years were plagued with two attempts at algebra credits. They were both failures and I ended up going the route of business math instead. I didn't understand, for the life of me, how any of that could help me in the real world. Basic trigonometry almost eluded me, but I managed to do a little better there. I ended up using trig almost every day for more than a decade in a quality control position I once held. Also, my wife uses algebra on a regular basis in her pharmaceutical position. So much for not needing math.
