Troutman board set for annual retreat

Troutman leaders plan to cover a vast array of town matters when they meet later this week for their annual planning retreat.

The Board of Aldermen will meet with other top staff members both Friday and Saturday at Little Joe's Chapel and Enrichment Center on the Barium Springs Campus. And when Troutman leaders talk about planning, they are usually referring to the much-anticipated growth the town is expected to experience when the economy is again heading in the right direction.

For example, a discussion of a roadway protection overlay for N.C. Highway 21 — just beyond the town's southern edge — is planned.

Town leaders will also get an update on Troutman's land use plan and street improvement and water and sewer projects that are under way.

They will also discuss how Troutman can mimic other municipalities that went through growth spurts with a talk centered around an article titled "Our Smartest Growing Cities."

But there are also more immediate items on the retreat agenda.

Each of the town's department heads will give a kind of state-of-the-department report.

"We try to get in as much as we can at these retreats to make sure everyone is up to speed," said Town Manager David Saleeby. "We want to make sure the board is very, very clear about what we are doing and where we are heading, so when they make decisions, they are making informed decisions."

One of those decisions may soon be about the town's official color.

The what?

"We have a town seal," Saleeby said. "And sometimes we advertise that seal and other things about the town in magazines and other places. And whenever we represent the town, we would like it be with a consistent color."

Saleeby said some municipalities have official birds and plants among other things.

"We just want a color that is the same all the time," Saleeby said. "And whatever color the people of the town feel best represents them, I'm sure the staff and board would support it."

The Troutman Planning Retreat kicks off Friday at 9 a.m.
