Iredell County's record-high unemployment numbers have resulted in a $144,938 grant from the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.
The federal program, which was created in 1983, helps fund agencies that provide emergency food and shelter services to families in need.
The funding is a direct allocation from EFSP National, which typically awards grants to states, which then distribute on a county-by-county basis.
"With the unemployment rate as high as it is, we were given a direct allocation," said United Way of Iredell County Operations Manager Liz Burns.
This year's was the largest single grant the United Way of Iredell County has received through the program, Burns said.
"It's a bad thing to be allocated this money, but it's a good thing they think we need it," she said.
Last year, Iredell County received $112,000 at the start of the year, and several months later was given an additional $58,000 via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Organizations that have received past funding include Fifth Street Shelter Ministries, Mooresville Christian Mission, Mooresville Soup Kitchen, Iredell Christian Ministries and the Salvation Army.
Nonprofits that apply for grant funds must use an accounting system, conduct an independent annual audit, practice nondiscrimination and provide food and shelter programs.
Those interested must submit a letter of request and supporting documentation to the United Way of Iredell County, 1835 Davie Ave. Suite 401, Statesville, NC 28677 by Feb. 19.
