Sophomore wrestler Sharif Humes recently picked up his first North Piedmont 3A conference victory, much to the delight of head coach Mickey Jordan.

An athletic 215-pounder, Humes won an 11-5 decision during the Greyhounds' match against West Rowan that illustrated how far he has progressed in his first-ever wrestling season.

"This is his first year wrestling," Jordan said. "At first we were hoping he didn't lock hands four times to lose the match. We were worried about him throwing full nelsons and getting (disqualified) for technical violations. Now, he's going out there and winning matches. He's gotten better and better and is just a sophomore."
