Second Fret Coffeehouse and Music Hall has been a gathering place for Mitchell Community College students, musicians and residents since opening its doors last fall.

This week, the unique restaurant that sits on the corner at 240 W. Broad street has much to celebrate.
Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of the coffeehouse owned by Bob Barber, who formerly owned a pet store downtown for 17 years.

"We think we've brought a really neat thing to Statesville," he said.

As is the case for most small businesses trying to establishing themselves in the community, the first year has brought a mixture of excitement and challenge for Barber.

He said the economy and a summer without the business benefits college students bring has presented Second Fret with hardships, and makes it difficult to stay afloat financially at times.

"Although it was very tough, everything has been what we've dreamed it to be," he said.

In a word, Barber said, the first year has been "crazy."

"It's probably the most challenging year of my life," he added.

The restaurant has served as a venue for arts and entertainment. Barber estimates Second Fret has hosted some 100 musical groups and 1,000 performers since opening the doors.

As the months progress, Barber said, Second Fret will continue to evolve into not only a bistro and musical hall, but a certified art gallery, as well.

Artwork will be displayed on the walls and range from $25 to $150. Artist will switch out their work every few weeks.

Barber is proud of what his business has to offer.

"We feel we are on the cutting edge of what the vision is for Statesville," he said. "We're in tune with what Statesville is looking to be."

Second Fret hosts musical performances six nights a week and on Saturday mornings, as well as open mic and karaoke sessions.

"We hope more people will come in and appreciate and experience what we're trying to do here," Barber said.

Waitress Brie Barber said there isn't anything like Second Fret in the area.

"I hope this place can help make Statesville grow," she said. "There isn't a place like this within 200 miles."
